April is an association that promotes and defends free software and digital freedoms. Over the years, its workload has grown: the number of issues to work on, each more urgent than the last, continuing to rise.

April in financial difficulty

For the last three years, our financial situation is in peril. Last year, thanks to a tremendous wave of support, our campaign “Llama Unchained” allowed us to meet our budget. Unfortunately, due to budget restrictions of certain collectives (Paris and Toulouse who are stopping their membership, perhaps temporarily), declines in company turnovers, and a reduction in individual membership means that April needs €30,000 to comfortably make ends meet before the end of 2025. It’s looks like we’ll have to get things going again!

Llama Unchained

For this new campaign, we’re relaunching “Llama Unchained!”

Our team from last year, which for a little while became an editorial crew of journalists and comedians, has gone back to work, and this time new people have joined it. Be on the lookout, because from today, and for nine weeks, a new copy of our autumn magazine the Llama Unchained will appear every Wednesday. You’ll find most of the columns from 2024, presenting various actions by the association over the years, but also new sections such as Echo of the Associations, Free Distribution or Who’s hanging with your Llama?.

It’s up to you to decide, issue after issue, if our initiative is enough to convince you to take out a membership or, at least, encourage you to make a one-off donation from time to time to support us. We’ve made the choice to be independent from institutions and therefore without subsidies, and our request for a tax ruling has been refused twice (but we don’t give up that easily, we’re going to resubmit our case). Without regular financial contributions, April wouldn’t be able to act so freely!

This year, we’ve published a home page for the campaign from the outset.

You’ll find an introduction, links to the latest issues, calls to action and a “wall of joy” where the names of new members or donors will appear. You can be one of them!

Read it, devour it in one go, slowly digest one or two articles per day, browse through it section by section, don’t hesitate to participate in one of the next issues by submitting a photo or a comment on social media using the #LeLamaDéchainé hashtag, and above all, talk about it and share it as much as possible!
